Comment: Henry's father, John, died
just 5 days after Henry passed--a family loss of both son and father in less than a
week, and due to the fact that Henry left young children, must have made
it extremely difficult on the household! The following year in 1918, three of
Henry's children died: Tommie, age 21, in June, was struck by
lightning on the front porch; John Henry Jr. died at the age of 6 in
October; and daughter, Bertha (a sickly child), died at 12 years old in
November. Our great-grandma (Nellie), had to be a strong woman to
endure all these hardships on her own, no doubt! My grandmother, Lillian, also
married in 1918 (Sept.). I can only imagine how difficult it must have
been to have just lost her father the year before and an older brother, whom
she adored, four months prior. I'm sure she also missed her precious dad
or older brother being able to give her away. She always kept the photo of
dad, Henry, proudly displayed in her home. |
