Note: John was grandfather to my grandmother, Lillian. The documentation I've acquired concerning John (about 50 pages) is in reference to his military pension as a home guard during the civil war and the guardianship of himself awarded to older son, J. Henry. I have also been in contact with Marie Paul (granddaughter of Americus Mattox. Americus was sister of John). Marie, still living at 101, remembers her Great Uncle John driving a horse and wagon and having a goiter on his neck (called a 'wen' in her days). She said she was close to the family, particularly John's side. She knew our grandparents, Frank & Lillian (Mattox) Wilcox, well and stated they were her cousins. She also knew of Lillian's parents, Henry & Nellie Mattox. Marie was about 9 years younger than our grandfolks. Susan Hallford-Crowe |
