Comment: Nellie was our maternal great-grandmother.
She was well thought of in the community and considered a matriarch among
its citizens. According to Grace Peacock (Nellie's granddaughter who
Nellie raised as her own) many sought Nellie out for her wisdom, charitable
hospitality, and good advice. She and her husband, Henry (elected sheriff
before he died of pneumonia), were both well loved and
standing pillars in the community.
We know little of Nellie's parents and her siblings. If you have any info
concerning them, please contact us! After my mother talked with her
sister, Hazel, 04/28/08, Aunt Hazel said Nellie had a brother, Jesse, and
sister Victoria (Aunt Vicky) who married Perry Williams. Aunt Vicky was
short while Uncle Perry was tall and lanky. Aunt Vicky was a
diabetic. Mother remembers meeting Aunt Vicky at least once. Anita Harris forwarded a
photo of Nellie's brother, John, to us as well as photos of Aunt Vicky and
her children (Williams). According to a US census, John sold pianos for a living. Aunt
Hazel also faintly remembered Nellie having a brother, Jasper.
