Story Account "Uncle Bert was a wonderful man, he was everybody's favorite, at least next to my Dad he was my favorite. He went away to Columbus when he was young, he met and married Aunt Janie. She was all but deaf, he said he would spend the rest of his life looking for a doctor that could repair her hearing and he did, but nothing could be done. Aunt Janie was from Columbus, GA and all her family was there. After a couple of years he moved his family back to Holmes County to Grandma's house. I know Aunt Janie must have felt terrible, not being able to see her family and not being able to hear what was being said when someone visited. Many thought she was eccentric. Beloved Uncle Bert and Aunt Janie had 6 children, Jack, Gloria, Billy Bert, Ann, Sue and Larry Joe (Sonny). Billy was sickly, he was born with a heart defect and he died, I believe in 1946. It almost killed Uncle Bert! Not too long afterward Uncle Bert met the Master, he accepted Jesus as his LORD. Uncle Bert spent the rest of his life serving the LORD. No one will know until we reach the other side how many people he helped and how many souls he won to CHRIST, truly a saint. Aunt Janie had a stroke and he cared for her as long as he could before he put her in the nursing home in Bonifay. Uncle Bert lived 5 miles from town, however he went into town every day to feed her breakfast and her lunch, then he paid a woman to feed her her dinner, this he did for 5 years. She didn't know who he was, he would visit with the others who he mostly knew. Grandma Texann gave Uncle Bert her house and land that Grandaddy Alex gave her when the divorce was final. Uncle Bert bought land down the road from the Rich's and he gave Grandma's old place to his son Jack. That property was homesteaded in 1896 by Alexander McKinnon Willcox( on the papers he spelled his name with two lls, Willcox, as did Thomas Willcox when he came to this land from England. Uncle Bert died in Jan. of 1996." |
